COVENTRY: The mother of Sufiah Farooq, the child genius who shocked the world with her revelation that she is a social escort, has started a family website to counter "misconceptions" about her family.

Halimahton Yusof set up www.hyusof.com on April 2 with her son, Iskander, 21, at the helm, to clear the air about certain issues related to their family's history.

The first entry, which did not directly address 23-year-old Sufiah's situation, said the majority of articles about Sufiah were misleading.

It said much had been written about Sufiah's current occupation but most had been misleading on several crucial points.

"Sadly, it seems that most journalists would rather entertain their readers than focus on writing factually accurate articles; it's not entirely their fault, though, as Farooq often talked nonsense to journalists and sometimes seemed to be trying to cultivate the appearance of eccentricity."

The website said one of the "inaccuracies" was that Farooq was behind the outstanding academic prowess of her five children, including Sufiah, who was accepted by Oxford University at age 13.

According to the entry, Farooq wasn't largely responsible for teaching the children.

"For most of the Yusof children's early life, Halimahton was practically a single parent as Farooq was in prison, having been convicted of mortgage fraud, or on the run for six years.

"He only returned to the household when Iskander, the youngest at the time, was 7 years old. By this stage, the Yusof children were already prodigies."

The entry said they were anywhere between three and seven years ahead in most academic subjects despite the fact that they spent most of their time engaged in less bookish activities such as tennis or playing with other children.

Farooq is now back in prison for indecent assault of two 15-year-old girls whom he tutored.

Halimahton, who has since started divorce proceedings, said in a recent interview that she wanted to set the record straight on her children's much-touted genius.

"The teaching methods are all mine. I taught the children since they were small. However, Farooq took the credit but I did not mind as it was a family thing. Sometimes, I felt upset and the children thought it was unfair."

Claims of strict regimes, that the cold would help concentration were explained as rantings by Farooq, who either did it to boast to reporters or in the words of his wife, "He just loved to talk".

The site did not list Sufiah or Farooq.

When asked why the misconceptions were not corrected earlier, Halimahton said the family never read or cared about what was being said in the press.

"We didn't care about what people said about us. We are a family. But now I feel that I should put some things straight."

Halimahton and Iskander were in the process of compiling a book on the principles of teaching when the latest story on Sufiah made headlines.

The story in the News of The World, the British newspaper which uncovered her sex-for-sale activities recently, stated that Sufiah charged up to STG1,000 (RM6,400) per customer.

When Halimahton was reported in Malaysian newspapers as saying how much she missed her daughter, Sufiah revealed that she enjoyed a life "far more glamorous than she ever dreamt of when she went to Oxford University aged 13".

Halimahton, who was born in Muar, studied at the Tunku Khursiah College before going to the United Kingdom where she pursued further education and studied organometallic chemistry at the University of Hull.

She did not complete her PhD as she wanted to spend time with her children.

The youngest, Zuleikha Sabrina, has enough A's at 14 to enter university but is waiting for two more years as "I want to to learn more social skills before I go to university".

Halimahton was concerned that Sufiah would be seen as a role model, especially when she was accepted into university at a tender age.

"Do not glorify her. Do not condone her actions. I fear that youngsters see her as a role model. If anyone should be seen as role models, it is her siblings.

"I would say they are cleverer. Being clever means that you can adapt to situations and still keep our principles."
